Image Converter: Offline Drag-and-Drop for SVG, WEBP, AVIF and ICO

Tired of uploading screenshots to sketchy online converters just to turn a PNG into a WEBP?

Or SVG files that nothing on Windows will open? Or icons that look fine on the desktop but blurry in the taskbar?

Image Converter fixes all three in one small window. Drop a file, and the converted copy appears in the same folder. Nothing gets uploaded anywhere. 😊

Image Converter window: pick a format, drop image files to convert them

Pick a Format, Drop Your Files

One window, one dropdown, one drop area. That’s the whole interface.

  • Choose the target format from the dropdown. It remembers your last choice.
  • Drop one file or fifty onto the window, or click Select File
  • Click Open Output Folder to see the results, saved next to the originals

A notification tells you how many files converted. If one fails, the error text is copied to your clipboard so you can paste it somewhere useful.

12 Image Formats

FormatWhy you’d use it
PNGScreenshots and graphics, keeps transparency
JPG / JPEGPhotos, smaller files than PNG
WEBPWeb images, smaller than JPG or PNG
AVIFThe newest web format, smallest files
ICOWindows shortcut and program icons
SVG (input)Turn vector logos and icons into any format above
GIF, BMP, TIFF, PBM, PGM, PPMOlder and specialty workflows

Every format converts to every other one, except SVG. SVG goes in, it doesn’t come out.

SVG Files, Drawn the Way Your Browser Draws Them

Most desktop image tools can’t read SVG at all. Image Converter hands it to the Microsoft Edge engine (WebView2), the same one that shows SVGs on web pages.

  • Real size: the image comes out at the SVG’s own width and height
  • Transparency kept for PNG, WEBP and ICO
  • White background for formats without transparency, like JPG and BMP, so see-through areas don’t turn black

If the Edge engine can’t handle a file, FFmpeg gets a try as a backup. The status line at the bottom shows what’s happening.

Real Multi-Size Windows Icons

A proper Windows icon is four images in one file: 256, 48, 32 and 16 pixels. Windows picks the right one for the desktop, the title bar or Alt+Tab.

Most online converters give you a single size, which looks blurry everywhere else.

Best results: start from a square image, 512 x 512 or larger. You get all four sizes, high-quality resizing and full transparency. SVG logos work too.

Why I Built It

I kept hitting the same three jobs:

  • A screenshot that needed to be WEBP for a blog post
  • An SVG icon that needed to be a PNG thumbnail
  • A proper multi-size ICO for a desktop shortcut

Each one needed a different tool, and most wanted me to upload my files. Now it’s one small window on my desktop.

What’s in the Download

  • ImageConverter.ahk: the AutoHotkey v2 script you run
  • lib folder: the WebView2, GDI+, NotifyV2 and ScriptObject libraries, plus the WebView2 loader files
  • docs folder: a user guide in HTML and PDF
Requirements: Windows 10 or 11 and AutoHotkey v2. FFmpeg on your PATH (free from ffmpeg.org) for most conversions. The WebView2 Runtime for SVG files: it’s already on Windows 11 and free for Windows 10. Making ICO files from PNG or JPG needs neither.
