Ever been on a call and needed to mute right now? Not after you find the little mic icon.
I remote into client computers a lot. Muting my mic or my speakers fast matters.
Device Mute is an AutoHotkey v2 tray tool that gives you a hotkey for each: your microphone, your speakers, or both at once. 😊
Three Hotkeys: Mic, Speakers, Both
Each hotkey is a toggle. Press it once to mute, again to unmute.
| Toggle | Default hotkey |
|---|---|
| Your microphone | Ctrl+Shift+M |
| Your default speakers | Ctrl+Shift+Win+M |
| Mic and speakers together | Alt+M |
Every press pops up a short notification, so you know which way it went. The tray icon also changes to show if your mic is muted.
Pick Your Microphone Once
Most PCs have more than one input: a headset, a webcam, the laptop’s built-in mic. Device Mute lets you choose which one the hotkey controls.
The first time you run it:
- Windows Sound settings open and your input volume gets highlighted, so you can see which mic is live
- A list of your sound devices shows up, filtered to microphones
- Double-click your mic and you’re done
Switched headsets? Pick Change Microphone from the tray menu.
A Reminder That You’re Still Muted
We’ve all talked for a minute before realizing we were muted. Device Mute has a setting for that.
Tick Message Stays On for Mute Reminder in Preferences. The mute notification then stays on screen until you unmute, and clicking it unmutes you.
What’s in the Download
- DeviceMute.ahk: the AutoHotkey v2 script you run
- lib folder: the device picker, the Preferences window, NotifyV2, ScriptObject and the UIA-v2 library
- res folder: the muted and unmuted icons for mic and speakers
Your mic choice and hotkeys are saved to Settings.ini next to the script.
Get Device Mute
Device Mute is $4.99. You get the full source, so you can change anything you like.
One less thing to fumble for on your next call. ⚡
